New Delhi: Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are poised to make a return to the Vijay Hazare Trophy, India’s premier domestic one-day tournament, as both star batsmen aim to maintain their form in the limited-overs format. While Rohit had confirmed his availability earlier, reports now indicate that Kohli has also agreed to participate.
Contrary to speculation, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has clarified that neither player was mandated to feature in the tournament. A BCCI official stated that the decision to play was entirely the players’ own and not directed by the board.
Coaching staff, including head coach Gautam Gambhir, have consistently encouraged senior players to engage in domestic cricket during breaks from international duties. This approach saw both Kohli and Rohit feature in the Ranji Trophy following India’s disappointing tour in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
In the ODI format, Rohit and Kohli continue to be central to India’s batting lineup. Gambhir underlined their value, praising their experience and performance in the dressing room while expressing hope that the duo will continue to contribute significantly in the 50-over game.
“They are world-class players, and their experience is important for the team. They have been performing at a high level for a long time, and their continued presence is crucial for India’s success in ODIs,” Gambhir said after India’s 2-1 series win over South Africa.
The upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy will thus mark a high-profile return for two of India’s most accomplished batsmen, highlighting their ongoing commitment to both domestic and international cricket.
