New Delhi: Shubman Gill has been appointed as India’s new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma ahead of the three-match series against Australia later this month.
According to reports, the decision to remove Rohit from ODI captaincy was made to maintain harmony within the team setup. The selection committee felt that retaining Rohit as captain in a single format, especially one that is played the least, could have affected the dressing room environment.
It was felt that a player of Rohit’s stature continuing as captain only in ODIs might have led to his personal philosophy influencing team culture, creating inconsistencies in approach across formats. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar had earlier stated that having three different captains in all formats was “practically impossible.”
Reports also indicate that head coach Gautam Gambhir initially chose to stay in the background during his first six months but became more actively involved in team decisions following the Test series defeats against New Zealand and Australia.
Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are expected to play under Shubman Gill’s leadership in the upcoming ODI series. With both players in their late 30s, the team management is said to be planning for a smooth transition ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup.
The selectors reportedly want to ensure that the team remains stable even if the senior players experience a sudden dip in form, avoiding any disruption in leadership continuity.
