Adelaide: Mumbai’s Rohit Sharma etched his name in cricket history on October 23, becoming India’s third-highest run scorer in One Day Internationals (ODIs). In the second ODI against Australia at Adelaide Oval, Rohit needed 46 runs to surpass Sourav Ganguly’s tally of 11,221 runs, and achieved the milestone with a boundary off Adam Zampa in the 21st over.
Ganguly, who represented India in 308 ODIs between 1992 and 2007, amassed 11,221 runs in 297 innings. Rohit, meanwhile, reached the feat in just 275 ODIs, highlighting his prolific scoring rate. With this achievement, Rohit joins Sachin Tendulkar (18,426 runs) and Virat Kohli (14,181 runs) as India’s top three run-getters in the 50-over format.
Rohit also set another landmark, surpassing Ganguly’s 9,146 runs as an opener to become India’s highest ODI run scorer in the opening position. He achieved this in the first over of the second ODI, needing just one run to overtake Ganguly after scoring 8 runs in the series opener.
While Viv Richards still holds the record for the most ODI runs scored in Australia, Rohit’s feat strengthens his position as one of India’s most consistent and prolific limited-overs batters. With 11,225 runs and counting, Rohit Sharma continues to chase the records set by Tendulkar and Kohli, cementing his legacy in Indian cricket.
