MARGAO: In last six months, Madgaon, Colva, Maina-Curtorim, Cuncolim and Fatorda police stations have taken action against 15,058 drivers for violating traffic rules and recovered Rs 17 lakh from them.
So far, Rs 17 lakhs has been recovered for speeding, driving the vehicle without a number plate, not wearing a helmet and seat belt, driving under the influence of alcohol and unlicensed driver.
Margao police took action against 3844 drivers and recovered a fine of Rs 4 lakh 17 thousand.
Meanwhile, Maina Curtorim police have taken action against 2,241 drivers and collected fines of Rs 3 lakh 6,550.
Colva police have taken action against 1,681 drivers and recovered a fine of Rs 1 lakh 350.
Cuncolim police have taken action against 6,021 drivers and collected fines of Rs 6,48,350. Fatorda police took action against 1,271 drivers and recovered a fine of Rs 1,61,850.
In the first six months of last year, police in all the five police stations have cracked down on 23,397 motorists.
The Madgaon police have acted upon 4,183, Maina-Curtorim police 3,287, Colva police 1,776, Cuncolim police 5,551 and Fatorda police 8,600 drivers.
However, the current statistics show that the ratio seems to be declining this year, which is a positive thing.
Covid 19 has restricted the movement of people, and people worry about why they are driving when they are afraid of the police, the police said.
