CANACONA: Road improvement and resurfacing works worth about Rs 2.8 crore have been launched in the Canacona Municipal area, with hot-mixing of two roads in the tourist hub of Palolem commencing on Tuesday.
PWD (Roads) officials said a total of 12 internal roads across different parts of the municipality have been approved on priority, with works scheduled to be taken up and completed before the onset of the monsoon.
Minister for Sports & Youth Affairs, Art & Culture and Tribal Welfare and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar inaugurated the resurfacing works from Maria’s house to Rosh House in Palolem and from German Bakery to Victor’s house at Ourem, Palolem. Authorities also said that additional stretches, including Palolem junction to Patnem, the main Palolem beach street and Nirankar Mutt road, will be taken up shortly.
The brief function was attended by former councillor and ex-Canacona Municipal Council chairperson Simon Rebello, former chairperson Ramakant Naik Gaunkar, former vice-chairperson Gandesh Madgaokar and local residents.
Speakers at the event also remembered late former CMC chairperson Laxuman (Bakal) Pagui, former councillor of Palolem-II, noting his efforts to push for improvements in the road network and development of the tourist area.
Rebello welcomed the commencement of works and credited the Canacona MLA for pursuing key development initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure across the municipality.
