Mumbai: High-value ₹2,000 banknotes worth ₹5,884 crore remain in circulation, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said on Wednesday, nearly two years after announcing their withdrawal.
The RBI had declared on May 19, 2023, that ₹2,000 notes would be withdrawn from circulation, though they continue to be legal tender. At the time, the total value of these notes in circulation stood at ₹3.56 lakh crore. As of September 30, 2025, approximately 98.35% of the notes have been returned.
The RBI provides multiple avenues for returning the notes. Since May 2023, individuals and entities could exchange ₹2,000 notes at 19 RBI issue offices across the country. From October 9, 2023, these offices also began accepting deposits of ₹2,000 notes directly into bank accounts. Additionally, the public can send the notes via India Post from any post office to RBI issue offices for credit to their accounts.
The 19 RBI issue offices are located in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram.
