New Delhi: The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has approved defence procurement proposals worth around Rs 79,000 crore, aimed at enhancing the operational and logistical capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces.
For the Indian Army, the council granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for several major acquisitions, including the Nag Missile System (Tracked) Mk-II (NAMIS), Ground-Based Mobile Electronic Intelligence System (GBMES), and High Mobility Vehicles (HMVs) fitted with Material Handling Cranes. These additions are expected to strengthen both combat readiness and battlefield mobility.
The Indian Navy will see upgrades with approvals for Landing Platform Docks (LPDs), 30mm Naval Surface Guns (NSG), Advanced Lightweight Torpedoes (ALWT), Electro-Optical Infra-Red Search and Track Systems, and smart ammunition for the 76mm Super Rapid Gun Mount. LPDs will enhance the Navy’s integrated sea capabilities, supporting peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief operations. The indigenously developed ALWT is capable of neutralising a variety of underwater threats, including conventional, nuclear, and midget submarines, marking a significant step towards self-reliance in undersea warfare. Meanwhile, NSGs and smart ammunition will bolster precision targeting, anti-piracy efforts, and low-intensity maritime operations.
For the Indian Air Force, the DAC approved the procurement of the Collaborative Long Range Target Saturation/Destruction System (CLRTS/DS), alongside other proposals to strengthen air power and precision strike capabilities. The CLRTS/DS is an advanced autonomous system capable of taking off, navigating, detecting targets, and delivering payloads without human intervention. Its induction will enable the Air Force to engage multiple long-range targets with improved accuracy and coordination, enhancing India’s air combat capabilities.
These acquisitions reflect a concerted effort to modernise the armed forces across land, sea, and air domains, while also advancing indigenous defence technology and operational self-reliance.
