New Delhi: Russia has indicated its willingness to increase supplies of crude oil and liquefied natural gas to India as disruptions in West Asia continue to create uncertainty in global energy markets. The proposal came during high level discussions in New Delhi aimed at strengthening economic and strategic cooperation between the two countries.
Russia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov held a series of meetings with senior Indian leaders, including National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Discussions focused heavily on expanding energy cooperation and ensuring stable supply chains for India.
During the engagements, Russia indicated that its energy companies possess the capacity to steadily increase shipments of crude oil and liquefied natural gas to the Indian market. The assurance comes at a time when geopolitical tensions in West Asia have affected global energy flows and caused significant price volatility.
The situation has been intensified by disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passage that handles nearly one fifth of the world’s oil and LNG shipments. Any instability in the region directly impacts energy importing nations such as India, which relies heavily on overseas supplies.
Energy cooperation was a major topic at the meeting of the India–Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation, co chaired by Manturov and Jaishankar. The discussions focused on expanding trade, strengthening industrial cooperation and identifying ways to boost bilateral investment.
Both sides reviewed the progress made after the 23rd India–Russia Annual Summit, where leaders agreed on a five year roadmap to expand economic collaboration and raise annual bilateral trade to 100 billion US dollars by 2030. The summit involved talks between Vladimir Putin and Narendra Modi.
In addition to energy, the talks also covered sectors such as fertilizers, technology, innovation, connectivity and critical minerals. Russia noted that it had already increased fertilizer supplies to India by around forty percent by the end of 2025 and expressed readiness to continue supporting India’s requirements.
The two sides also discussed regional developments and explored opportunities for deeper cooperation in civil nuclear energy, signalling a broader effort to strengthen long term strategic ties.
