London: In a strategic move to bolster bilateral relations, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has commenced a six-day visit to the United Kingdom and Ireland, culminating on March 9. This diplomatic endeavor, which began in London, aims to enhance economic cooperation and people-to-people exchanges between India and the UK. Jaishankar’s visit comes at a pivotal moment, as both nations seek to strengthen their comprehensive strategic partnership across various sectors.
Jaishankar met with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street, where he conveyed warm greetings from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Their discussions focused on advancing bilateral economic ties and enhancing people-to-people exchanges. Additionally, Prime Minister Starmer shared the UK’s perspective on the Ukraine conflict, highlighting the global implications of the ongoing crisis.
In another significant engagement, Jaishankar met with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, expressing gratitude for the warm welcome and optimism about their discussions. He also held meetings with Home Secretary Yvette Cooper and Secretary of State for Business and Trade Jonathan Reynolds. These interactions covered crucial areas such as talent flow, joint efforts against trafficking and extremism, and progress on the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations.
Jaishankar will proceed to Ireland on March 6 and 7, where he will engage with his Irish counterpart Simon Harris and other dignitaries. This visit is expected to further strengthen India’s friendly ties with both the UK and Ireland, leveraging shared democratic values and growing economic engagements.
