New Delhi: As tensions between India and Pakistan continue to rise, with Islamabad’s aggressive targeting of civilian areas and military installations in Jammu and Kashmir, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged both nations to find ways to de-escalate the situation. In a conversation with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Rubio emphasized the need for a “constructive” approach from both sides.
In response, Jaishankar reiterated that India’s approach has always been measured and responsible. “Had a conversation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio this morning. India’s approach has always been measured and responsible and remains so,” Jaishankar wrote in an online post.
Marco Rubio, a prominent figure in the administration of former US President Donald Trump, made similar appeals earlier, urging Pakistan’s Army Chief General Asim Munir to take steps toward de-escalation. According to US Department of State spokesperson Tammy Bruce, Rubio also extended US assistance to facilitate “constructive” talks between India and Pakistan.
This is the second time in a week that Rubio has engaged with Jaishankar on the issue, having emphasized the need for de-escalation during a prior conversation. Rubio also spoke to Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, stressing that Islamabad must take concrete actions to end its support for terrorist groups.
Former US President Donald Trump also voiced his desire for the two countries to de-escalate, with White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stating that Trump understood the long-standing tensions between India and Pakistan, and hoped for a peaceful resolution.
Jaishankar’s comments come amidst reports of Pakistan’s “irresponsible and cowardly” actions, including shelling in the Jammu and Kashmir region. Pakistani artillery claimed the life of a senior official in Rajouri, adding to the growing death toll from cross-border firing. These attacks are seen as evidence of Pakistan’s disregard for civilian safety, further heightening tensions.
In response to Pakistan’s actions, India launched Operation Sindoor, a targeted strike against Pakistan-based terror camps in retaliation for the April 22 massacre of 26 civilians in Pahalgam by Pakistan-linked terrorists. The ongoing situation continues to call for responsible actions, with calls from both the US and India for a measured approach to avoid further escalation.
