New Delhi:
In a recent interactive session at Delhi University’s Hansraj College, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar painted a nuanced picture of US President Donald Trump, describing him as an “American nationalist” whose policies are poised to significantly impact global affairs. Jaishankar’s remarks underscored the strong personal bond between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Trump, as well as India’s evolving global influence and the dynamic nature of international diplomacy.
Jaishankar emphasized that despite Trump’s potential to alter the global landscape, India’s foreign policy will remain steadfastly guided by national interest. He reflected on his recent attendance at Trump’s oath-taking ceremony, where India received favorable treatment, highlighting the robust bilateral ties between the two nations. “Yes, he will change a lot of things, maybe some things will be out of syllabus, but we have to conduct foreign policies out of syllabus in the interest of the country,” Jaishankar stated, acknowledging that while there may be areas of difference, there will also be numerous areas of cooperation.
The minister stressed the strong personal relationship between Modi and Trump, a factor that is expected to play a significant role in shaping the future of India-US relations. Jaishankar also noted India’s growing global influence, mentioning that even non-Indians sometimes claim to be Indian, reflecting the changing international perceptions of the country.
Jaishankar shared insights into his unexpected transition from academia and diplomacy to politics, attributing his entry into politics to Prime Minister Modi’s persuasive efforts. He also highlighted the ongoing reliance of Indians living abroad on their homeland for support, saying, “Those who leave the country turn to us only. We are their caretakers outside.”
Jaishankar’s comments came at a time when global diplomacy is undergoing significant shifts. With Trump’s return to the presidency, India is poised to navigate complex geopolitical dynamics, including the evolving US-China rivalry and regional tensions. However, Jaishankar’s assurance that India’s foreign policy will remain aligned with national interests provides a stable foundation for these navigations.
