Canacona: Around 50 settled and disposed Mutation Case files were burnt and reduced to ashes in fire at Canacona Mamlatdar Office early Tuesday morning.
According to sources, the fire engulfed the Mamlatdar office, has almost burnt the files and old papers, besides destroying a Fan and two Tables, while some of the files were half burnt, and many of the necessary files were removed on time.
According to Canacona Mamlatdar Manoj Korgaonkar, the fire broke out due to short circuit at about 4 am on the intervening Monday-Tuesday night. “ My Staff, who had come early on Sagar-Kawach Duty, when opened the office door, noticed the smoke emanating from one of the offices where the Data Operator Sets on the ground floor of the (Dy. Collectorate complex, which also houses the Mamlatdar office), and got alert and swiftly took the initiative, to remove some file bundles to safety, they informed to me as early as 6 am, and the Fire services were called. But by then, a few of the Files and other old papers, one fan, two tables and all pertaining to settled and disposed-off mutation cases were already reduced to ashes. But timely intervention could save many important files. We have an inventory of the files, and mostly we have not lost any corrupt files or papers. Short-circuit could be the reason, informed Mamlatdar Korgaonkar.
When asked if the fire broke –out in a store room, I was informed the old files were stored in the office, across from the table of the Data Operator, and luckily, the fire was stopped before it got spread to other important and sensitive files in Mamlatdar office.
The fire personnel took care of the situation and ultimately exchanged the fire in minutes, informed Korgaonkar.
Meanwhile, strong suspicion is being cast amongst the public about whether the fire is accidental or intentional. A post on the social page calls for the installation of CCTV in government offices. Otherwise, such incidents will continue happening in the name of a shortcut.
Another social activist writes, ‘ Fire has reached from Forest to Offices’, yet another post says, Just like Corona, which used to take leave during elections, fire is brilliant, attacked only the old files and not the new ones’.
Incidentally, recently there was a post circulated that an administrative officer in Canaocna had deleted the name of the concerned party from the form I and XIV, and the case is under investigation.
