New Delhi:
In a significant push towards enhancing India’s coastal infrastructure, the National Sagarmala Apex Committee convened in New Delhi, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss the future of port development and coastal community growth.
The meeting, chaired by Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, was attended by Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant, Union Minister for MoRTH Nitin Gadkari, and representatives from coastal states.
This gathering underscored the government’s commitment to leveraging the Sagarmala initiative for comprehensive economic and social development along India’s coastline.
Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant emphasised the government’s efforts to modernise ports and strengthen jetties, which are crucial for boosting hinterland tourism and improving daily commutes. Additionally, he highlighted the focus on port-linked industrialization, aiming to unlock the potential of port-led development through exports, a vision championed by the Union Government under the leadership of the Prime Minister. The initiative also prioritizes coastal community development, with a focus on skill enhancement, social and financial inclusion, and economic growth. Exploring new avenues such as Ro-Ro services and the Water Metro are part of the broader strategy to enhance connectivity and economic opportunities.
