Panaji: The 250 million litres per day (MLD) water treatment facility at Sal is on track to be commissioned by March 2026, Water Resources Minister Subhash Shirodkar informed the Goa Legislative Assembly on Thursday.
He assured that the project would significantly ease the water supply issues currently plaguing North Goa.
Speaking during the discussion on budgetary grants for the Water Resources Department (WRD), Shirodkar said the department is actively working to obtain administrative approvals and conducting surveys for the construction of three to four dams, which are expected to meet Goa’s long-term water demands.
“The major barrage being constructed at Sal is a forward-looking initiative. Once complete, we’ll be able to draw 250 MLD of water, supplementing the existing intake of around 120–130 MLD,” he said.
Shirodkar added that the project is being executed on a “war footing” and will benefit the entire North Goa region, including areas such as Pernem, Calangute, and Candolim, eliminating water scarcity concerns in those locations.
In addition to water supply measures, the minister also addressed the issue of flooding. He revealed that the government is planning to carry out desilting work in the Kushawati river to prevent recurrent flooding in Paroda.
“We are exploring ways to desilt the Kushawati. If needed, we’re ready to collaborate with the National Institute of Oceanography to execute the plan effectively,” Shirodkar said.
The WRD’s initiatives are part of a broader infrastructure push aimed at ensuring water security and mitigating flood risks across the state.
