BICHOLIM: Mining operations have officially started today in Block No. 2 at Sirgao by Salgaocar Shipping Company.
The move comes with strict environmental safeguards as mandated by the Department of Mines and Geology.
Narayan Gad, Director of Mines and Geology, confirmed that a 150-meter buffer zone has been established around the historic Lairai Temple, while an 80-meter buffer zone has been imposed around Dhondanchi Tali.
These measures aim to protect the environment and preserve the cultural sanctity of these sites.
“We have ensured that mining activities proceed with due respect to the ecological and cultural significance of the region,” Gad said. “Our department will conduct regular monitoring to ensure full compliance with all environmental guidelines.”
Local residents and environmental groups have welcomed the move but continue to urge for transparency and strict enforcement of regulations to prevent any adverse impact.
The commencement of mining in Block No. 2 marks a new phase in the region’s resource development, balancing industrial progress with environmental responsibility.
