VASCO: With the Damodar Saptah festival fast approaching, Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar on Friday morning conducted a joint site inspection of the ongoing road widening works near the St Andrews Church junction. The inspection was carried out in the presence of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Girish Borker, as well as officials from the PWD, traffic department, and local police.
Speaking to reporters, Salkar said that while the road widening project was originally planned for completion before June 28, the early onset of monsoon showers had disrupted the schedule.
“The road is almost ready and the overhead electrical cables have already been removed. I have directed the authorities to ensure that all potholes are cleared as soon as possible, especially with the Saptah festival just around the corner,” said Salkar.
He added that the PWD had also been asked to reinstate roads wherever necessary, particularly along the Mestawada road where sewage works had begun earlier. “I have asked the concerned departments to begin this work by Monday and complete it within 8 to 10 days,” he said.
Salkar also confirmed that a comprehensive hot-mixing project for Vasco’s roads is lined up and will begin soon after the monsoons, by the end of August.
Giving details of upcoming infrastructure plans, Salkar said, “We have widened the road and built trenches near St Andrews Church junction. A traffic signal will be installed at this location soon. We also plan to beautify the entire St Andrews Square with a new clock tower and pavered footpaths to give the city an aesthetic entry point.”
He further added that underground cabling along Swatantrata Path has been completed, and that the revamping of this road will start simultaneously with other beautification projects.
“All necessary approvals and work orders have been issued. As soon as the monsoons end, we will begin work on beautifying Swatantra Path and FL Gomes Road, alongside the St Andrews junction. These projects will be executed in parallel,” Salkar assured.
