New Delhi: The Sanchar Saathi app, designed to enhance mobile security and prevent fraud, recorded a ten-fold increase in downloads on Tuesday, rising from an average of 60,000 per day to nearly 6 lakh, according to Department of Telecom (DoT) sources.
Even before the government’s November 28 mandate to pre-install the app on all new devices and push it to existing phones via software updates, 1.5 crore users had already downloaded it.
DoT officials said the surge reflects growing public interest in the app’s features, which include IMEI verification, reporting stolen phones, and flagging fraudulent communications, while assuring that it does not access personal data beyond user-permitted actions.
