Navelim: Sao Jose de Areal booked their place in the semifinals of the 44th Gold Silver Rolling Trophy Football Tournament, organized by Navelim Sporting Club and played at Rosary Church Ground, Navelim, after defeating Guardian Angel SC 2-1.
Despite intermittent rains, around 1,000 spectators turned up to watch the thrilling contest between the title-contending sides.
The match began with both teams creating early chances. Jeston Fernandes of Sao Jose de Areal narrowly missed a scoring opportunity in the 12th minute, followed by a near miss from Vitorino Fernandes of Guardian Angel SC. However, it was Vitorino Fernandes who opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a stunning curling shot.
Sao Jose de Areal responded immediately after halftime, with Brussel Viegas leveling the score in the 46th minute with a precise glancing header. The winning goal came in the 56th minute, when Azilton Viegas capitalized on a loose ball in a crowded penalty area to calmly slot it into the net.
Guardian Angel SC threatened several times, but Dresden Viegas of Sao Jose de Areal cleared crucial attempts to maintain the lead.
Brussel Viegas of Sao Jose de Areal was adjudged Man of the Match and received the award from Simon Fernandes.
With this victory, Sao Jose de Areal advances to the semifinals, keeping their hopes alive for lifting the prestigious trophy.
