MARGAO: Sao Jose De Areal edge past Parish Youth Nuvem by 1-0 to move to the Semis of the 18th All Goa Guirdolim Panchayat Cup 2024 organised by Guirdolim Club and played at Chandor Church Sports Complex.
In a battle of attrition where both teams were not ready to budge an inch it was Sao Jose De Areal that came up trumps. The match began with both teams equally balanced and going all out for victory. It was Nuvem that had the first try in the 8th minute when Nicolau Colaco floated a long ball for Jerose who after hoodwinking a couple of defenders released Rosario Noronha who fumbled with his first touch and his weak shot was easily saved by the Areal keeper. Priston Gomendes of Areal tested the Nuvem keeper with a long-distance try in the 14th minute which drew a full-stretch save. In the 20th minute, a free kick taken by Nicolau Colaco of Nuvem was tipped over the crossbar by the Areal keeper. Tyson of Areal shot wide from a close distance in the 25th minute. Both teams headed into the break level on terms without troubling the scorers.
Change of ends also saw both teams going for victory with Jerose being the provider on a couple of occasions only to see his teammates squandering chances. Areal winger Aryan started a move in the 45th minute and floated the ball in the 6-yard box which was met by Priston whose shot was saved by the Areal keeper diving to his left and pushing the ball out for a corner kick. The resultant corner kick saw Tryson placing the ball in the top corner from an acute angle to give Areal the lead. Nuvem then attacked in numbers with Francis Colaco moving out of defence to the wing and floating long balls into the Areal box but his strikers were not able to capitalise. In the dying minutes, Nuvem had three corner kicks but couldn’t convert those into goals. The match thus ended in favour of Sao Jose De Areal with the scoreline reading 1-0.
Tyson Carvalho for his goal was awarded the Player of the Match by Jimmy Cardoso, Ex Goalkeeper of Guirdolim Club.
