Cuncolim: Sao Jose de Areal edged past CRC Chinchinim 3-2 in a thrilling encounter to book their place in the quarterfinals of the Mansion House Football Cup, organised by Cuncolim Union at the Government School playground, Cuncolim.
CRC Chinchinim drew first blood in the 22nd minute through Piedade Rebello’s neat finish. Sao Jose de Areal fought back strongly and found the equaliser in the 46th minute via Barsel Viegas (1-1).
The second half turned into a goal fest. CRC’s Serio Gomes quickly restored their lead in the 47th minute (2-1), but Areal hit back almost instantly, with Daryl Costa slotting home in the 50th minute (2-2). Just two minutes later, Costa struck again to complete his brace and seal the win for Areal (3-2).
Earlier in the first half, Areal’s Jeston Fernandes had come close in the 3rd minute, while CRC’s Joshua Correia was denied by the rival defence in the 10th.
The tournament was formally inaugurated by Vineet Bothra, Sales Head Goa, Mansion House, in the presence of Joseph Dias (VJT Arts), Oscar Martins (Organising Chairman), Sammy Tavares (Cultural Secretary, Cuncolim Union), Cian Fernandes (Treasurer, Cuncolim Union), and other dignitaries.
Daryl Costa of Sao Jose de Areal was named Man of the Match for his match-winning brace and received the award from Vineet Bothra.
