PANAJI:The Mhadei river diversion case will now be heard by the Supreme Court in January 2025. In the third week of January of next year, the Apex Court will consider the contempt pleas and special leave applications submitted by the three riparian states of Goa, Karnataka, and Maharashtra.
After nearly nine months, the matter was scheduled for hearing on Wednesday morning, but the Court decided not to have a hearing and instead postponed it until January.
According to sources, as instructed at the February hearing, all three States have submitted more written arguments to the Court. The case was previously heard in July 2023.
Additionally, the Court instructed the three States to designate a nodal counsel to bookmark the convenience compilations and ensure that only the convenience compilations are referred to during the arguments.
Goa, Karnataka, and Maharashtra have petitioned the court for special leave in order to contest the August 2018 Mhadei Distribute Tribunal award.
Additionally, the Goa government has accused Karnataka of contempt for building at Kankumbi in order to divert water from the Mhadei River to the Malaprabha basin. The Central Water Commission’s technical approval of the detailed project report (DPR) for the Kalasa-Bhandura drinking water project has also been contested by the State in court.
