NEW DELHI: Supreme Court refuses to interfere with the order of Bombay High Court at Goa dated 28th June 2022 directing Goa Panchayat elections to be conducted within 45 days instead of the decision of the State to conduct the same after the monsoon season.
The state government on Monday moved the Supreme Court challenging the high court order that directed the panchayat election process to be completed by August
12.
The government has submitted that it would be appropriate to hold the elections to 186 village panchayats in September, Pangam said
In its petition, the government also submitted that if the elections are held in September, it may be possible to comply with the triple test and provide reservation to the
OBC category, on account of the time available.
On June 28, the high court of Bombay at Goa quashed the state government’s decision to postpone the elections to 186 panchayats, directed it to fix the date within three days, and complete the entire election exercise within 45 days.
The state government said that it has rightly decided that the election should be deferred because of the monsoon.
It said that there are various problems related to the
transportation of election material because of rain, and it is pertinent to note that the election will be held using ballot paper. As such, there are chances of the paper being spoiled or the ink being smudged when the voter handles the ballot paper.
