J&K: All schools across Jammu and Kashmir will remain closed today following a devastating cloudburst in Ramban district that triggered flash floods and landslides, resulting in the loss of three lives and extensive damage to infrastructure.
The incident occurred on Sunday morning, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. Several houses and shops were damaged, and traffic movement along the crucial 250-kilometre Jammu-Srinagar National Highway was severely impacted.
Announcing the precautionary closure, Jammu and Kashmir’s Education Minister Sakina shared the decision on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “In light of the continuing severe weather conditions and forecasts, it has been decided that classwork in all schools of the valley shall remain suspended for one day tomorrow (21st April). This decision has been taken to ensure the safety and well-being of all students.”
Yellow Alert Issued for Multiple Districts
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in the region, warning of potentially hazardous weather conditions. Affected areas include:
Bandipora, Kupwara, Baramulla, Ganderbal, Anantnag, Kishtwar, Ramban, Doda, Pulwama
While dry conditions are expected to prevail in most parts of the region, the yellow alert serves as a warning for possible localized disruptions.
IMD Advisory for Farmers
In light of the inclement weather, the IMD had earlier advised farmers to suspend all agricultural operations from April 18 until the afternoon of April 21. The advisory was aimed at preventing losses due to sudden weather disturbances.
Rescue Operations and Government Response
Visuals circulating on social media show widespread damage in Ramban, including blocked roads and stranded vehicles. Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Chaudhary visited the affected areas to assess the situation firsthand and oversee ongoing rescue efforts.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed grief over the tragedy, stating, “Extremely anguished by the tragic landslide and flash flood in Ramban, which has caused considerable damage to life and property. My thoughts are with the affected families in this difficult hour. We are in touch with the local administration to ensure immediate rescue efforts wherever needed.”
Rescue and relief operations are currently underway, with local authorities working to restore connectivity and assist affected families.
