PANAJI: Questioning the ignorance and dilly dally approach of government over repairs of schools, Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Wednesday demanded to complete the repair works before the schools reopens.
“On receiving complaints from various areas, I have directed officials to take this issue seriously and complete the repair by this week. Government needs to be more concerned about students. We can’t put their lives to risk,” Alemao said.
“With such poor management and crumbled infrastructure, can we successfully implement the National Education Policy? This looks like the government wants to privatise the schools too,” Alemao pointed out.
He said that roofs of around 35 schools across the state are opened for repairs, but the concerned department has failed to complete it.
“These roofs were opened on 15th May. Work is going on at a slow pace. Despite knowing that monsoon arrives in Goa in the last week of May or first week of June, they took it lightly. Hence, books and other things from the schools are damaged due to rain water,” Alemao said.
He said that delayed work has resulted in several schools across the state facing issues, with roofs opened for repairs, leaving them vulnerable to rainwater entry and disrupting the learning environment.
“The ongoing repairs pose a significant challenge with school reopening scheduled for June 4. Given the circumstances, it is essential to prioritize completing the repairs or finding alternative arrangements to ensure students have a safe and conducive learning environment,” he said.
“The situation reflects poorly on the government’s priorities and management, suggesting a lack of consideration for the impact on students and schools. This has led to a challenging situation for students, teachers, and parents,” Alemao said.
Cuncolim MLA demanded that the education department should intervene and get these works completed before schools reopen.
