PONDA: The Kavlem locals today expressed unhappiness and concern over almost twelve dangerous scrapyards jam-packed with scrap material and demanded to clear them for the village’s safety.
Villagers pointed out a huge scrapyard between the Dhavlim Petrol pump and the residential area.
The scrapyard is jam-packed with all scrap material, including empty barrels used to store chemicals. Locals demanded action from Panchayat, the Deputy collector Pollution Board and Health Department. Locals pointed to recent horrific incidents of scrapyards catching fire in various parts of Goa.
Locals demanded to clear all around 12 scrapyards. They even questioned whether there was any inspection by the Fire Force team of the scrapyard located near the petrol pump.
Replying to Gramsabah Sarpanch Manuja Nakk said most scrapyards are illegal and Panchayat had not been permitted to operate. She said when Panchayat had issued demolition notices to all the illegal scrapyards, the scrapyard owners challenged the Panchayat order in Court and managed to get a stay on the demolition of the structure or building from which they were operating.
Kavlem locals demanded with Panchayat to inspect mud dumped in paddy fields in front of Shantadurga Temple. Locals feared that if mud was not removed, then it may cause flooding in surrounding houses during monsoon.
Kavlem Panchayat’s secretary said the existing MRF garbage disposal shed will be shifted to another place. The Panchayat is in the process of identifying a new place for the garbage disposal plant, and after the new shed is completed, the existing shed will be shifted. The Locals also discussed garbage littering near Panchayat and other areas. Some locals complained that the garbage collecting workers needed to come to their houses to lift the garbage.
The Panchayat will also conduct repair and maintenance work of public wells in the Panchayat jurisdiction. The water sample will be tasted, said the secretary. He said VDC had already decided on the issue and will be repaired through 14th Finance Funds.
