Mapusa: Tensions flared outside the Mapusa Sub-District Office on Wednesday as a scuffle broke out between Congress workers and police personnel during a protest led by the Saligao Block Congress Committee.
The protestors had assembled to submit a memorandum to the Executive Engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD), demanding urgent road repairs in the Saligao constituency. However, the situation escalated after the Congress delegation found no official present to accept the memorandum.
Police personnel, deployed in large numbers in anticipation of the demonstration, reportedly blocked the workers from entering the premises, resulting in a heated confrontation. Amid the commotion, GPCC North Goa District President Virendra Shirodkar’s shirt was allegedly torn, with Congress leaders accusing the police of manhandling.
The protest, though initially peaceful, turned chaotic as party members insisted on entering the premises to press their demands. No arrests were reported at the time of filing this report.
Congress leaders have condemned the police action and demanded accountability, stating their democratic right to protest was violated.
