CANACONA: Amidst rising sea –level, strong waves have hit the Polem beach causing massive sand erosion and damages to the shoreline at the State’s southernmost beach in Canacona.
A few shacks were swept away while an electricity pole literally washed across the Polem beach, after the rising sea level wreaked havoc of sorts.
According to locals, the sea level suddenly began to rise substantially particularly during high tide for the past two days and strong waves began to pound the coastline. Within hours, the coastline was reduced to largely battered, as strong waves were continuously taking off large chunks of sand, destroying many of the sand dune and virtually sweeping away the foundations of some of the shacks still standing in the private properties. An electricity pole also got uprooted and fell on the beach sands, with the waves literally pulling it down towards the sea.
A few of coconut saplings, besides coconut trees also got uprooted, while roots of different tree were dangerously exposed after the waves caused heavy sand erosion on the original sand-dunes, informed sources.
