VASCO: The second phase of the underground cabling project was officially launched in Vasco on Wednesday morning. The inauguration took place at the hands of Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar, with the presence of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Girish Borker, City Ward Councillor Shami Salkar, officials from the electricity department, and other dignitaries.
Speaking at the event, MLA Krishna Salkar outlined the scope of the second phase, which will focus on the St. Joseph Vaz road. He provided an update on the progress of the overall project, stating, “We have completed the first phase of Swatantra Path, and we have now launched the second phase. After completing the works on St. Joseph Vaz road, we will move to the third phase, focusing on FL Gomes road. This will mark the completion of underground cabling in the city, after which we will extend the work to other parts of the constituency.”
The second phase is being carried out at a cost of Rs. 6 crores, while the completed first phase was done at a cost of Rs. 11 crores. The upcoming third phase is projected to cost around Rs. 8 crores. Salkar highlighted the cumulative investment, stating, “The total cost for underground cabling in the city amounts to Rs. 25 crores.”
He emphasized that the development work was strategically planned to improve the city, which serves as a primary entry point for visitors. Salkar assured that the second and third phases would be completed within six months, ensuring all work is wrapped up before the monsoon season. “We are committed to completing the works before the monsoons,” he added.
Salkar also addressed ongoing development projects in the city, urging residents to cooperate during the temporary inconvenience caused by road digging. “We are undertaking several development works simultaneously. I request citizens to bear with us for a better tomorrow,” said Salkar.
He further mentioned the additional work being undertaken to improve Vasco’s infrastructure. “We have laid new water pipelines, inaugurated new upgraded transformers, and are planning to hotmix the roads dug up due to development works,” he said. The beautification of Swatantra Path is also in the pipeline, with old pavers being replaced and new trees planted. “The beautification of Swatantra Path will be undertaken at a cost of Rs. 15 crores,” Salkar concluded.
The MLA assured residents that these initiatives were part of a comprehensive plan to modernize Vasco and provide long-term benefits to the city’s infrastructure.
