PANAJI: An undertrial prisoner is accused of attempting suicide by self-immolation in the Colvale State Central Jail. The Goa Human Rights Commission (GHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of the event.
The Inspector General of Prisons and the North Goa district magistrate have received letters from the Commission, which has started legal action. The officers have been instructed by the Commission to carry out an exhaustive inquiry into the incident and report back to the Commission by December 10.
Raju Das, the prisoner, set himself on fire within the facility. in the moment, Das is being treated in Goa Medical College.
A hearing has been set for December 12 at 10.30 am by the GHRC, which is chaired by member Desmond D’Costa in his capacity as acting chair and member Pramod V Kamat.
According to insiders, Das’s situation is getting better.
When it was first reported, he was estimated to have had about 40% of his body burned. Now, however, it is known that only about 12% of cases have burn injuries.
