TALEIGAO: In a swift operation, Panaji Police arrested a 63-year-old man for illegal gambling activity near the Taleigao Market on Tuesday evening. The accused, Chandrakant Nonu Kunkolkar, a resident of Amrawado, Taleigao, was allegedly caught red-handed accepting bets on numerical digital numbers—a form of gambling—at an open public location.
The arrest was made following a state complaint filed by Head Constable Sainath Shanu Vaigankar of Panaji Police Station. According to the police report, the incident took place at around 5:55 PM on July 15, and an FIR was registered under Panaji Police Station Crime No. 100/2025, invoking Section 11(2)(a) of the Goa, Daman and Diu Public Gambling Act.
During the raid, police seized ₹1,070 in cash in various denominations, along with other gambling materials from Kunkolkar’s possession. He was formally arrested at 6:59 PM and later released at 7:02 PM the same evening.
The investigation is being handled by HC Sainath Vaigankar of the Panaji Police Station’s Anti-Gambling Unit.
Authorities reiterated their warning that such illegal betting practices, especially in public places, will be dealt with strictly under the law.
