New Delhi: In a landmark initiative aimed at supporting India’s armed forces, the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) has launched the Veer Parivar Sahayata Yojana 2025, a scheme that promises free legal assistance to the families of soldiers and paramilitary personnel while they serve the nation in remote and high-risk regions.
The message behind the initiative is clear: “You serve the nation at the borders, and we’ll take care of your family at home.”
The scheme was formally launched in Srinagar on Friday by Justice Surya Kant, Executive Chairman of NALSA and the next Chief Justice of India. The launch event was attended by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Jammu & Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, and J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
The programme was born out of Justice Kant’s reflections following Operation Sindoor, a high-risk military operation that deeply impacted him. According to sources, he felt a strong need for the judiciary to step in and support those who make the ultimate sacrifice for the country.
“It is the duty of the legal system to ensure our soldiers are not left to fight domestic legal battles alone,” he is reported to have said during internal deliberations.
• Free legal representation in civil cases involving family, property, or land disputes.
• Assistance across states—for example, a soldier serving in Kashmir can have their case handled back home in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, or elsewhere.
• The scheme will also cover paramilitary forces like BSF, CRPF, ITBP, and others who serve in similar isolated or hostile environments.
• Cases will be handled proactively through the district legal services authorities (DLSAs) under NALSA’s nationwide network.
One of the biggest challenges faced by armed forces personnel is managing legal matters when posted in inaccessible locations. With limited leave and restricted mobility, many are unable to attend court hearings related to property disputes, matrimonial issues, or inheritance claims—often resulting in unfavorable outcomes or prolonged delays.
Under the Veer Parivar Sahayata Yojana, soldiers will no longer be burdened with this struggle. The initiative aims to offer timely, effective, and accessible legal support to their families so that they can focus fully on national duty.
The scheme is set to be implemented before Justice Surya Kant assumes office as Chief Justice of India on November 24. Its rollout marks a rare but powerful intersection of judicial responsibility and national service, sending a strong message of gratitude and solidarity with India’s armed forces.
This marks the first-ever national legal welfare programme specifically tailored for military and paramilitary families, and could serve as a model for future initiatives linking public service sectors with judicial aid.
