Margao: The District and Sessions Court confirmed the interim bail granted to Amrit Govind Shankalkar, suspended secretary of the Raia Village Panchayat, in connection with a rape and sexual assault case registered against him.
Shankalkar was arrested on December 23, 2025, following a complaint lodged by a woman alleging rape and sexual assault.
He was granted interim bail on December 27, 2025. With the latest order, the court has converted the interim relief into regular bail, subject to conditions.
According to sources, the case is linked to an earlier financial dispute between the two parties. It is claimed that a property transaction between them did not materialise despite substantial monetary dealings, after which Shankalkar had filed a criminal complaint against the woman. She was arrested in October 2025 and later released on bail.
Subsequently, the woman filed the present complaint alleging sexual assault and rape.
Legal sources clarified that the confirmation of bail does not amount to acquittal, and the matter will be decided on merits during trial.
The court has imposed conditions while granting bail, details of which were not immediately disclosed.
