Old Goa:In the historic town of Old Goa, on March 12, 2025, the Seva Dal, Goa, organized a poignant event to mark the 95th anniversary of the Dandi March, a pivotal moment in India’s struggle for independence. This commemoration, held at Mahatma Gandhi Circle, brought together prominent figures to reflect on the enduring impact of Mahatma Gandhi’s non-violent resistance movement. The event was a testament to the power of unity and peaceful protest, values that continue to resonate deeply in contemporary society.
The program began with the stirring rendition of “Vande Mataram,” setting the tone for a day of reflection and celebration. Mr. Socorro Menezes, Vice President of the North Goa District Committee, chaired the event, which included a welcome address by Mr. Rajan Ghate, Chief of Seva Dal, Goa. Mr. M.K. Shaikh, Senior Vice President of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC), delivered the inaugural speech, emphasizing the Dandi March’s role in galvanizing the masses against colonial rule.
Keynote speaker Mr. Girish Chodankar, a permanent member of the Central Working Committee of the Indian National Congress and former GPCC President, highlighted the relevance of non-violence and unity in today’s context. Other notable speakers included Adv. Mr. Carlos Fereira, who shared insights on the march’s lasting legacy and its impact on the fight for justice and equality. The event also honored Mr. Sharad Chopdekar, a veteran who had participated in the Dandi March, for his contributions.
The program concluded with a moment of silence at Mahatma Gandhi’s statue, where participants laid flower petals and rock salt in tribute, followed by the singing of the National Anthem. This solemn gesture reinforced the spirit of patriotism and unity that defined the event. Prominent attendees included Mrs. Pratiksha Khalap, Mahila Congress President, and several GPCC secretaries and district presidents.
