PANAJI: In a firm response to ongoing violations of safety protocols, Valpoi police on Tuesday detained seven individuals — six men and one woman, all from Panaji — for attempting to enter the restricted waters of Nanoda Bhatwadi, a location known for its treacherous conditions and past drowning cases.
The group was apprehended during a routine patrol after being spotted near the danger zone, where public access is strictly prohibited. Despite prominent signage and repeated alerts from both police and local authorities, the individuals admitted they were planning to swim in the river, knowingly defying the restrictions in place.
Nanoda Bhatwadi, though picturesque, has been designated a no-entry and no-bathing zone due to its powerful currents and erratic water flow, which have claimed several lives over the years. Warning boards have been installed across the area, and advisories are regularly issued — particularly during monsoon months when the water becomes more volatile.
Authorities expressed concern over the growing trend of people ignoring such safety measures, often to capture social media content or engage in risky thrill-seeking activities. Officials cautioned that such actions not only place the offenders at risk but also create dangerous situations for rescue personnel in case of emergencies.
The police have urged the public to take safety advisories seriously and avoid restricted zones to prevent further tragedies. Legal action is being initiated against the seven individuals for violating official orders.
