PANAJI: A tragic stampede during the annual Shirgao Jatra in Goa claimed the lives of seven devotees and left several others injured, casting a shadow over the traditional celebration.
The incident occurred when an unexpected surge in the crowd led to chaos near the temple premises early on Friday morning.
Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
In a statement, he said, “I am deeply saddened by the tragic stampede at the Shirgao Jatra, which has claimed the lives of seven devotees and left many others injured. My heartfelt condolences go out to the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones in this devastating incident. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances that led to the stampede.
Emergency services responded swiftly, and the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. The state government is expected to announce ex-gratia relief for the victims’ families.
Local officials and law enforcement are currently working to ensure crowd control and prevent further incidents as the festival continues.
