MORMUGAO: Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar launched a ₹1.5 crore sewerline replacement project near Canara Bank at Baina, aimed at addressing persistent sewage problems in the area.
The project involves replacing a nearly 40-year-old sewer pipeline that has been the cause of frequent blockages and overflows. The ageing line is being upgraded to a larger-capacity pipeline by increasing its diameter from the existing 150 mm to double the size to 300 mm, which is expected to significantly improve sewage flow and reduce recurring complaints.
Speaking at the launch, Amonkar said the sewerage work is already underway at Sada jetty and Bogda and other parts of the Constituency and is nearing completion. He added that the main pipeline connecting Sada to the Baina sewage treatment plant is expected to be replaced shortly, which will further strengthen the sewage infrastructure in the region.
” We faced a lot of inconvenience due to this 40 year old sewerage pipeline and we are replacing it with a new pipeline, double the size to ensure smooth flow. This is a vital project and we are trying to upgrade the entire sewage infrastructure in Mormugao constituency. All the internal sewage pipelines across the constituency will be replaced in Phases. Besides this , the main sewerage pipleines flowing from Sada via Jetty area to the main Sewerage treatment plant at Baina will also be replaced in phases and we have already started the tendering process. We want to solve the sewage issues on a permanent basis . ” Said Amonkar
The MLA urged residents to connect their household sewerage lines to the new system once the work is completed. He assured that government support would be extended to residents who are unable to afford the cost of sewer connections.
Ward councillor Shraddha Amonkar along with local residents and officials were present at the site during the launch, expressing hope that the long-standing sewage issues affecting Baina will finally be resolved with the completion of the project.
