COLVALE: Four police officers, including a deputy superintendent, were suspended for allegedly smuggling drugs and alcohol into the Central Jail at Colvale.
This further cemented the prison’s questionable reputation as a hub for drug trafficking and smuggling.
Navdeep Pavane, an IRB constable, was suspended last month after he was seen trying to bring cell phones and drugs into the jail during a regular frisking.
It is believed that Pavane’s connections to police officers were cut off on Tuesday. These consist of IRB ASI Suraj Toraskar, Head Constable Rameshwar Talkar, Constable Prasad Shetye, and Deputy Superintendent of Jails Krishna Usgaonkar.
They were charged with helping prisoners obtain drugs, and it was said that they had made a Rs 5 lakh deal for this purpose. All four were suspended after an investigation, albeit it has not yet been revealed what kind of drugs were involved.
Following a raid on one of the accused’s rooms last week, during which they allegedly admitted to sneaking drugs into the facility, the event initially gained attention.
The latest suspensions highlight a broader problem of illicit activity at the Colvale Jail, which has developed into a smuggling hub.
According to sources in the jail administration, criminals have used cutting-edge technologies, including as drones, to get over the prison’s highly secured walls, sometimes with political support.
Under the cover of darkness, drones are allegedly used to drop illegal items including drugs and cell phones onto the jail premises.
