DABOLIM: Several Matvem residents resorted to panic after several wells have been contaminated with petroleum products.
People of Dabolim have expressed fears that one of the petroleum or naphtha pipeline might be leaking and this leaked inflammable products are percolating down and contaminating the ground water.
Local panch Neelima Naik demonstrated how water fetched from well caught fire when brought in contact with a flame. She said 6 wells in the area as well as surrounding streams appeared to be contaminated.
The area is located below the petroleum pipelines. Oil companies have been requested to stop the oil supply through these pipes immediately.
She appealed to the people in the locality to stop using water from the wells and borewells.
Local biodiversity board, health department, pollution control board and Disaster Management Authority and other authorities were approached as the matter is very serious and the wells were seized.
Locals said that they were experiencing foul smell to the well water for last few days.
