New Delhi: Shreyas Iyer, captain of Punjab Kings, has been penalised again for breaching the Indian Premier League Code of Conduct during his team’s match against Chennai Super Kings at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium.
The IPL Governing Council found Punjab Kings guilty of maintaining a slow over rate during the contest. Since it was the team’s second such offence this season, stricter penalties were imposed. Iyer was fined ₹24 lakh under the league’s regulations related to minimum over rate violations.
All other members of the Punjab Kings playing eleven, including the Impact Player, were also reprimanded. They were fined either ₹6 lakh or 25 percent of their match fees, whichever amount was lower.
Despite the disciplinary action, Punjab Kings delivered a strong performance on the field to secure a five wicket victory. Iyer played a crucial role in the run chase with a quick half century, scoring 50 runs from 29 deliveries to guide his side to victory.
Earlier in the match, Chennai Super Kings posted a competitive total of 209 for five after being asked to bat first. Young batter Ayush Mhatre led the scoring with an impressive 73 off 43 balls. He shared a solid 96 run partnership with Ruturaj Gaikwad, who contributed 28 runs.
Late contributions helped Chennai push their total past the 200 mark. Sarfaraz Khan struck a rapid 32 from just 12 balls, while Shivam Dube remained unbeaten on 45 off 27 deliveries.
Punjab Kings successfully chased the target, reaching 210 for five in 18.4 overs to register their second consecutive victory of the season, though the win was overshadowed by the disciplinary action over the team’s slow over rate.
