New Delhi: Indian cricketer Shreyas Iyer has shared his first statement after suffering a life-threatening spleen injury during the India-Australia ODI series in Sydney. The middle-order batter was injured on October 25 while taking a stunning diving catch to dismiss Alex Carey in the third ODI. He landed awkwardly on the ball, leading to severe internal damage.
Iyer was seen in visible pain and was immediately escorted off the field. Reports indicated that his vitals had dropped dangerously low by the time he reached the dressing room, prompting an urgent transfer to a Sydney hospital. There, he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and underwent an interventional trans-catheter embolization procedure to stop internal bleeding. He was moved out of the ICU earlier this week as his condition stabilised.
Breaking his silence on Thursday, Iyer posted an update on social media, expressing gratitude for the medical care and concern shown towards him. “I am currently recovering well and thankful for all the prayers, messages, and support. It’s been a tough few days, but I’m in good hands and focused on getting back to full fitness,” he wrote.
According to medical experts, Iyer’s recovery is expected to take around two months. This means he will miss the upcoming ODI series against South Africa in November-December and remains doubtful for India’s home series against New Zealand early next year.
Specialists from both India and Australia are jointly overseeing his rehabilitation. The BCCI confirmed that their medical team continues to monitor his progress closely. “His condition is now stable, and a recent scan showed significant improvement,” the board said in a statement.
Iyer’s injury has sparked concern across the cricketing fraternity, but his latest update has offered reassurance to fans. The 29-year-old remains determined to return to action once he has fully recovered.
