BICHOLIM: In the wake of safety concerns following this year’s Shri Lairai Devi Jatra stampede, the temple committee has declared that registration for dhonds performing agnidivya will close on September 30, 2025.
More than 20,000 dhonds have already registered, and those who haven’t are urged to do so before the deadline.
Committee president Dinanath Gaonkar stated that identity cards will be issued to all registered dhonds as part of enhanced safety measures for the festival.
Registrants are required to provide details, including the location where they observe vrat, to help the committee maintain accurate records.
The announcement follows a fact-finding report on the May 3 Shirgao jatra stampede, which highlighted overcrowding, lack of crowd management, and insufficient use of modern surveillance as major factors behind the incident.
The committee hopes that the ID card system will strengthen safety protocols and prevent similar tragedies in future celebrations.
