PANAJI: Amid growing concerns over a spate of dacoities in the state, Union Minister Shripad Naik has stressed the need for a new and more effective strategy to curb serious crimes in Goa.
Naik warned that criminals appear to be “growing stronger” and urged both the Chief Minister and the police machinery to adopt strong preventive measures to restore public confidence. He also appealed to citizens to remain vigilant.
Reacting specifically to the Mormugao–Baina dacoity, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said the government is taking strict action to curb such incidents and assured that law enforcement agencies are working intensively to crack down on organised crime.
The recent dacoity has heightened public concern, prompting renewed calls for improved policing, stronger surveillance, and swift action against criminal networks. Further investigations into the incident are underway.
The dacoity took place at Chamundi Arcade, a residential building in Baina, where a group of around seven armed assailants allegedly barged into a flat during the early hours. The intruders attacked the family with weapons and iron rods, injuring the flat owner Sagar Nayak, his wife, and daughter before fleeing with gold ornaments and cash.
Following the incident, South Goa Police launched a massive operation, including forensic inspections, fingerprint collection, and naka bandi across major routes in Margao and surrounding areas. The case has triggered widespread alarm among residents and political leaders, as it follows other recent incidents involving armed groups and organized theft.
