New Delhi: Shubman Gill has been discharged from Woodlands Hospital in Kolkata, offering India a timely boost ahead of the second Test against South Africa. The captain had been admitted after suffering a neck injury during Day 2 of the first Test, a setback that significantly affected India’s performance in the series opener, which ended in a 30-run defeat.
Cricket Association of Bengal president Sourav Ganguly visited Gill at the hospital on November 16, shortly after India’s collapse on a difficult Eden Gardens surface gave South Africa a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Gill had retired hurt while batting in the first innings after experiencing sharp neck pain following a sweep shot off Simon Harmer. Despite initial on-field treatment, the discomfort worsened, leading to his evacuation by stretcher later that evening.
The following morning, the cricket board confirmed that Gill would not take any further part in the Test. He was ruled out of India’s second innings on a pitch that continued to show uneven bounce, contributing to the team’s dismissal for 93.
Medical examinations revealed no long-term complications, and Gill was placed under observation before being cleared to leave the hospital. His recovery will continue under the supervision of the board’s medical staff.
The team management has not yet made a decision regarding his availability for the second Test scheduled to begin on November 22 in Guwahati. India are set to travel to the venue on Tuesday, with Gill’s fitness being closely monitored before a final call is made. His return would be a major lift for a side looking to level the series after a disappointing start.
