New Delhi: India’s Test captain Shubman Gill is off to a sensational start in the ongoing five-match Test series against England, having already piled up 585 runs in just two matches. With three games and potentially six innings still to go, the young skipper is now within striking distance of multiple world records—three of which are currently held by the legendary Sir Donald Bradman.
One of the most prestigious records Gill is eyeing is “Most Runs in a Test Series as Captain”, a record Bradman set 88 years ago during the 1936-37 Ashes, when he scored 810 runs in five Tests. With 225 runs more to go, Gill could etch his name in history by surpassing this iconic benchmark.
Bradman also holds the overall record for the “Most Runs in a Single Test Series”, having smashed 974 runs during the 1930 Ashes. For Gill to overtake this monumental feat, he will need to add 390 more runs in his remaining innings—a challenge, but not an impossible one given his current form.
Gill could also break the record for the “Fastest 1000 Runs as a Test Captain.” Bradman had achieved the milestone in just 11 innings, but Gill, who has already scored 585 runs in just four innings, has a golden opportunity to beat that pace if he continues his current scoring streak.
Additionally, the young Indian captain is on track to join an elite group for the “Most Hundreds in a Single Test Series.” Bradman had scored four centuries as captain in one series, while the all-time record of five tons is held by Clyde Walcott of the West Indies, who achieved the feat in 1955. With Gill already notching up three centuries, he needs just one more to equal Bradman’s record and two more to match Walcott.
Perhaps the most astonishing possibility is that Gill could become the first player ever to score 1000 runs in a single five-match Test series—a milestone even Bradman couldn’t reach. With his current momentum, Gill has a real shot at rewriting cricket history and cementing his legacy among the greats.
As the series heads to Lord’s, all eyes will be on Shubman Gill to see if he can convert this extraordinary form into a record-breaking campaign.
