New Delhi: India’s newly-appointed ODI captain Shubman Gill addressed the media for the first time since taking over the 50-over leadership from Rohit Sharma. Speaking ahead of the second Test against the West Indies in New Delhi, Gill revealed he was informed of the captaincy change shortly before the official announcement by BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
“It’s a big responsibility and an even bigger honour. I’m very excited to lead my country in this format,” Gill said, acknowledging the significance of his new role. Having also recently assumed Test captaincy, he expressed his desire to make an impact across all three formats. “I want to stay present, focus on the upcoming months, and win everything possible with the team,” he added.
Gill also praised Rohit Sharma, reflecting on the lessons learned from the veteran’s calmness and leadership. While Rohit will not be part of the Test and T20I squads, he will join Gill for India’s upcoming ODI series in Australia, alongside Virat Kohli, marking their first international appearances since the Champions Trophy earlier this year. The series may also serve as a potential final chapter in the careers of these two icons in international cricket.
Acknowledging the enduring influence of Kohli and Rohit, Gill emphasized the value of their experience and guidance. “There are very few players in the world with their skill, quality, and experience. I’m very happy to have them around,” he said, highlighting the mentorship they provide to the next generation.
For head coach Gautam Gambhir, the challenge lies in managing this transition carefully, balancing the integration of legends with nurturing emerging talent. Kohli and Rohit will now focus exclusively on ODIs, aligning with India’s long-term plans for the 2027 World Cup cycle. This selective participation allows them to preserve fitness and form while providing a steady guiding presence for younger players.
Gill’s remarks underscore the delicate equilibrium of honoring past legends while steering Indian cricket toward a future defined by youth, ambition, and sustained success.
