New Delhi: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly recently witnessed a heated debate over the development in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stepping in to address the rising tensions. At the heart of the controversy was the assertion that despite Chinese aid, the situation across the border remains dire. The discussion centered around comparisons of infrastructure on both sides of the border, sparking a verbal skirmish between the BJP and National Conference members.
Abdullah’s intervention aimed to placate both sides, emphasizing that any progress in PoK is largely due to Chinese assistance rather than Pakistan’s efforts. He highlighted that Jammu and Kashmir has developed its infrastructure without seeking help from foreign countries like China, America, England, or France. This stance underscored the self-reliance of Jammu and Kashmir in contrast to the dependency on external aid in PoK.
The debate was ignited by NC MLA Saifullah Mir’s comments on the better border infrastructure in PoK, which drew strong objections from BJP’s R S Pathania. Mir’s intention was to highlight the challenges faced by locals, particularly during harsh winters when roads are often inaccessible. However, his remarks were seen as praising a country with which India does not have diplomatic relations, leading to accusations of promoting separatism and terrorism.
Abdullah noted that while China has built roads in PoK, the overall situation there remains dire. He emphasized the need for development where necessary, focusing on the welfare of the people rather than engaging in political arguments. The debate highlighted the ongoing tensions between political parties regarding cross-border comparisons and foreign influence, underscoring the complexities of the Kashmir issue.
