New Delhi:
In a dazzling display of batting prowess, Smriti Mandhana and Pratika Rawal have set a new benchmark for Indian women’s cricket, leading their team to a resounding 304-run victory over Ireland in the third ODI. This win not only completed a 3-0 series sweep but also marked India’s highest-ever total in ODIs, setting the stage for a promising year as the country prepares to host the women’s ODI World Cup later in 2025.
Mandhana’s blistering 135 runs off just 80 deliveries, including 12 fours and seven sixes, was a highlight of the match. Her century, achieved in a mere 70 balls, made her the first Indian woman to score 10 ODI hundreds. This feat also earned her the record for the fastest ODI century by an Indian woman, surpassing Harmanpreet Kaur’s previous record.
The opening partnership between Mandhana and Rawal was nothing short of spectacular, as they amassed 233 runs for the first wicket. This stand is the third-highest opening wicket partnership for India in ODIs and laid the foundation for India’s monumental total of 435/5. Rawal, who scored her first ODI century with 154 runs off 129 balls, including 20 fours and one six, was equally impressive.
This series win is part of India’s six consecutive ODI victories, including 3-0 sweeps against both the West Indies and Ireland. This streak has built significant momentum for the team as they gear up for the ODI World Cup. Mandhana’s performance was not just about personal milestones; it also underscored her commitment to making this year the best for Indian women’s cricket in the one-day format.
Mandhana now holds the record for the most sixes in Women’s ODIs for India, equaling Harmanpreet Kaur’s 52 sixes but achieving this in fewer matches. Her aggressive batting approach, where she aimed to play her shots from the outset, paid off handsomely on a wicket that was conducive to scoring.
The partnership between Mandhana and Rawal was seamless, with both batters complementing each other perfectly. Rawal admitted to being cautious as she approached her century but opened up once she crossed the landmark, reflecting the confidence and form that has defined India’s recent performances.
As India prepares to host the women’s ODI World Cup, these victories and individual performances are crucial. The team’s ability to post high totals and secure comprehensive wins bodes well for their chances in the upcoming tournament.
