VASCO: Velsao-based social worker alleged that the roadside garbage is being dumped by educated people from their cars and bikes. Urged not to litter waste on the road; instead, hand it over to the garbage collector.
On Saturday, Jim Dsouza took the initiative to clear the overgrown bushes and clean the littered waste at the roadside of Velsao village.
D’Souza deployed three labourers to trim the overgrown wild vegetation and bushes at the roadside from Queeny Nagar to the Velsao road stretch.
Later, Jim Dsouza said that he was approached by some locals complaining about the overgrown bushes at the roadside, stating that these wild bushes are hindering the visibility of the commuters coming at the slope of Velsao road, which might cause accidents.
D’Souza said that after hearing the request of the people, they decided to clean the garbage at the roadside and trim the wild vegetation at the roadside.
When questioned about the Panachayat’s role in cleaning the waste at the roadside, D’Souza said that the Panchayat annually did the cleaning and bush clearing work since the panchayat body had been dissolved, he decided to take up the work to help people.
Dsouza also said that Panchayat has been doing door-to-door garbage collection, and the people should give their waste to the garbage collector rather than throwing it in the open, which further creates problems of stray cattle etc. He alleged that most educated people tend to throw waste from their cars and bikes at the roadside.
Another local, Sharad, said that the group of people approached Social worker Roquezinho D’Souza who conveyed the same message to Jim, who did this bush clearing work.
He further said that it is our duty as citizens to keep our surroundings clean and properly dispose of waste.
