PORVORIM: In order to learn more about the reasons behind the dust pollution and the inconvenience caused by traffic congestion brought on by the construction of the six-lane elevated corridor at Porvorim, the State government has submitted to the Goa Bench of the Bombay High Court (HC) that a meeting with representatives from the PWD, RTO, Traffic police, and contractors be called immediately.
As a first step to address traffic hazards and pollution caused by the ongoing construction of the Porvorim flyover, the High Court also ordered the State government to hot mix the diversion road from Mall de Goa to O Coqueiro Junction and mandated that the contractor sprinkle water four times a day to address the dust pollution choking the area.
Following the hearing of the Public Interest Litigation (PIL), which raised issues regarding pollution, road conditions, and public safety, Advocate General (AG) Devidas Pangam described the court’s orders.
“The state of the alternate roads being used during the construction was one of the main problems that the High Court addressed today. In addition to endangering traffic and public safety, these pathways are producing pollution, according to Pangam.
According to him, the court has ordered the stretch from Mall de Goa to O Coqueiro Junction to be hot mixed on a test basis. “The remaining space will also be used for hot mixing if this measure proves effective,” he continued.
At the subsequent hearing on December 12, the outcomes of this intervention will be examined.
Specific guidelines were implemented to control dust pollution, which was recognized as a serious issue. “To control dust pollution, the High Court has ordered four times a day to sprinkle water throughout the affected area,” Pangam said.
He stated that the goal of this strategy is to lessen the immediate negative effects of the building activities on the environment and human health.
Along with these actions, Pangam emphasized the significance of holding a unified gathering to discuss other general concerns brought up in the petition.
“In the following two or three days, the contractor, the PWD, the RTO, and the police traffic department will meet. Measures like placing signboards at strategic locations, managing traffic, and guaranteeing ambulances have easy access would be the main topics of this discussion, he stated.
Additionally, the AG affirmed that the meeting would examine emergency preparations, including the establishment of a trauma care center.
