New Delhi: As the cricket world watches India’s dominant run in the Champions Trophy 2025, a heated debate has erupted over whether the team’s decision to play all their matches in Dubai has given them an unfair edge. India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has come out swinging against critics, labeling them “perpetual cribbers” and insisting that Dubai is as neutral a venue for India as it is for any other team. The controversy stems from India’s unique situation, where they have avoided traveling to multiple venues, unlike their competitors who have been shuttling between three cities in Pakistan and Dubai.
In the Champions Trophy semifinal, India solidified their position by defeating Australia by four wickets at the Dubai International Stadium. Gambhir was quick to dismiss claims of an undue advantage, pointing out that India has not practiced at the stadium and instead trained at the ICC Academy, which offers vastly different conditions. He emphasized that the decision to include spinners in the squad was based on the subcontinent’s conditions, not the specific venue. The team’s strategy included only two specialist spinners, with the rest being quality all-rounders.
Critics, including former England captains Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain, have questioned the advantage of playing at a single venue. However, Gambhir remains steadfast, arguing that the conditions at the ICC Academy and the Dubai International Stadium are worlds apart. This stance has been reinforced by India’s impressive performance, which has seen them remain unbeaten in the tournament so far.
